2004 Donation

In 2004, clients were given the opportunity to choose a charity which Open Box would contribute towards on their behalf. This included the following worthy causes:

Tears is a non-profit, pro-life initiative that rescues abused, neglected and abandoned animals, providing them with food, shelter and much-needed veterinary care. Over the years, Tears has already found homes for over 4500 animals.

Every day, many South African mothers fall victim to AIDS leaving behind orphans in desperate poverty-stricken circumstances. When no family is left to care for these children, Nazareth House opens its doors and hearts to these orphans, giving them a quality of life that they would not otherwise have experienced. Nazareth House also runs many community projects, as well as a hospice, looking after South Africa’s elderly.

Founded in 1984, Tree is a non-profit NGO which provides training, resources and support to caregivers and parents in Early Childhood Development in disadvantaged communities. Tree provides opportunity for women’s empowerment, assists in income generation and teaches people to make educational material from waste. Every year, this organisation improves the education of over 80 000 young children in impoverished, rural communities.

Meaning “progress” in Xhosa, Baphumelele was founded in 1989 when Rosalia Mashale moved to Khayelitsha and found children looking through rubbish in search of food. This initiative takes care of 250 children between the ages of 3 months and 6 years and has branched out to provide the community with not only a children’s home but also a wood workshop, a crèche, a day clinic, a vegetable garden and a street-feeding programme. This initiative does not receive subsidies, and therefore relies heavily on donations from individuals and companies like Open Box.
