The Shaster Foundation aims to create a holistic, self-sufficient community that respects each other and their earth. They are a non-profit organisation run by volunteers. They provide a crèche and craft group during the day, a youth group in the afternoons and adult education programmes in the evenings. They provide meals for all the children in the crèche, cooking for an orphans feeding scheme, as well as a children's clinic where Open Box made a contribution towards much-needed medicines during 2007. On Saturday mornings they have a group of pensioners who come and tell stories to any kids who have nowhere to go and no-one to play with. The centre is based on an eco-village where all waste or water is re-used in order to achieve perfect recycling.

Open Box also contributed towards Masakhane Educare Centre in Masiphumelele by supporting their educational resources, staff development and by providing nutritional-enhancement through the children’s daily school meal… often the only daily meal for many of the children. And in terms of their outreach program in the local community, Open Box provided contributions through parent workshops, client support and staff development.
