An underground activity at Open Box which is steadily growing in popularity is barefoot bowls. Newbie Bowls (the gracious hosts) have popularised this surprisingly addictive event in the Cape Town Area.
The concept: fresh grass between your toes, afternoon summer sun on your face, the smell of delectable boerie rolls filling your nostrils, an ice cold frostie in your hand and a friendly, competitive game of bowls with some of the most chilled people in Cape Town.
This bi-annual event has become somewhat of an Open Box tradition, held every February and November at the Mowbray Bowls Club.
Open Box's history at the tournament goes back a fair way to February 2008, when the tournament was still held at the Western Province Cricket Club. Since then the tournament has moved on to Mowbray Bowls Club nestled at the base of Table Mountain. Many an Open Box foot (bare, of course) has had the priviledge of touching down on one of these two venues' hallowed greens (the memory of which each shall treasure for many a year to come).
Open Box's representation in the last tournament was in the form of team Lovely Lawn (formerly known as Good Grass). The team performed admirably, coming in second place in their pool. The final game proved to be riveting, with the result being decided in the final minutes of the match. Unfortunately for Lovely Lawn the result was not in their favour, but the pressure was intense and felt by all (especially the eventual pool winners).
If ever there was an activity that has gripped the imagination of the general Open Box community Newbie "Barefoot" Bowls is it!
