Fines & Casino Evening June 2008

June is a time of year associated with many important events here in SA: midwinter and the longest night of the year, Father’s Day, Youth Day and the Comrades Marathon. At Open Box however, the sixth month of the year can only mean two things: AGM, and Fines.

The big question is, what do you do when you have dirt on your co-workers, in the form of EPIC FAIL images, video footage, email/msn conversations gone bad, and much more? Luckily at Open Box we provide a very democratic medium in which you can air these matters anonymously. Enter the Fines Committee: a group of low down dirty spies intent on digging up the dirt on everyone, and taking the photos to prove it!

The theme this time around was “Casino Royale” and the evening was split into two distinct and equally entertaining sections – The Fines and the Casino. This is not just a chance to suit up and wear ties or dresses, but also ties AND dresses. To the consternation of the HR manager, his bet that one of the girls would not get dressed up resulted in him being forced to eat several sections of the Yellow Pages. At least he was given a knife and fork.

This Fines Evening was a “No Holds Barred” event. Some fines that come to mind include:

  • Meat-eating vegetarians
  • Cat-food-eating HR managers (yes, the same one)
  • Accidental deletion of D: drives
  • Dropping a phone in the toilet and then still using it afterwards
  • Squeezing stress balls until they explode
  • Unfortunate MSN conversations
  • Dodgy quotes
  • Who Can Schnorkle Faster: The Rematch
  • Candid Camera (why is it always the same guy?)
  • The re-awarding of the floating trophies: Most Impressive Car Incident, The Usual Suspect, and You’re Fired.

After the fines ceremony and with the employee dignity meter on a mid-year low, the night was only going to get better...much better. So with the blackjack tables set up, the roulette wheel spinning, the poker chips stacked, cocktails in the blender, and hunjids of custom-printed OB bank notes in play, the games were set in motion.

This was definitely one evening where the house was not going to win.
